I recently received an email from Billy St. Now that is how being politically incorrect is correctly done. He called a third a common hoodlum. He referred to himself as a “red-hot poppa,” fresh out of the “nuthouse.” He called another man a little pea-headed nut. The excerpt from Leibling’s book, "The Earl of Louisiana," is entitled “Nothing But A Little P_ant,” which was what Earl called one opponent who was at the Alexandria rally. (How many governors openly date a stripper while married?) At the Alexandria rally, he proceeded to roundly and soundly trash his political opponents in no uncertain terms. I was aware of Starr because the strip club where she regularly performed ran ads in The Times Picayune, a newspaper to which my grandmother, Odile Sandoz, subscribed.Įarl was politically incorrect long before the term came into use, and he was a master of the art. Long's wife had him committed after he declared his love for Blaze Starr, at the time a stripper on Bourbon Street. Liebling, recalled a political rally in Alexandria when “Uncle” Earl was running for re-election as governor - after he had himself released from a mental institution in Texas to which his wife had him committed. I just read an excerpt from a book about Earl Long, one of Louisiana’s most colorful governors. I understand that the cat was also excellent.

Even longer ago, Vita’s father had a Siamese cat who starred as Pyewacket in Bell, Book, and Candle, also at the Little Theatre. Anybody else remember the “Snake Lady?” Can we talk?Ī while back, Vita starred in Fiddler on the Roof at the Opelousas Little Theatre. Vita also told me about an employee at the Elbow Room who was known as the “Snake Lady” because she had a pet snake.

I was a youngster at the time, and I know of whom she wrote. Vita noted that there were several means of access to and from the bar - used by patrons for abrupt exits as others - irate spouses, irate parents, irate siblings - made inopportune entrances from another. Vita’s mother, Ruth Pressburg, worked for Judge Lessley Gardiner, and the “Courthouse Crew” would often gather at the Elbow Room after work to discuss the day’s happenings and perhaps imbibe one or two of Lloyd’s adult beverage creations. Her aunt, Velma Pressburg, was married to Lloyd Brusse, one of the bartenders there. Opelousas Little Theatre is located in South City Park. For such a tiny bar, the Elbow Room seems to have been very popular in its day - at least based on the response I’ve been getting. I recently received a wonderful letter from Vita Pressburg Clement, who readily admitted that she has been around long enough to remember the Elbow Room. Performances are March 28, 29, 30 and April 5, 6, 12, 13 at 7PM and April 7 and 14 at 2PM. The choreographer is Andi Fontenot, with a Musical Direction team consisting of Walter Duncan McBride and Jamie Green. This great story is brought to you in direction by Dana Reed and assisted by Meagan Louviere. Pippi Longstocking is a story based on the novel by Astrid Lindgren, translated by Philip Edmonds, with music and lyrics by Sebastian, adapted for the stage by Sebastian and Staffan Gotestam and published by Samuel French Publishers. Our wonderfully talented young cast tells this time-honored story to perfection. At the Opelousas Little Theatre, our small part of the world, Pippi wreaks havoc on any and all near her, for the most part, for their own good.

This uproariously funny musical, starring the world’s most popular enfant terrible, has played to sold out audiences the world over. When Pippi is not dancing with burglars, who are trying to steal the gold coins given to her by her father (a pirate who is revered as a king by a tribe of South Sea island cannibals), she is at the circus fighting the strongest man in the world or playing tag with policemen. And now the rollicking adventures, that put her at odds with the demands of life in a small town, fill an effervescent family musical written by Denmark’s celebrated composer, lyricist and recording artist, Sebastian. Dressed in strange clothes and living with her horse and pet monkey, she possesses supernatural strength and untold wealth. It is the wonderful adventures of Pippi Longstocking, a high-spirited, warm-hearted young girl who incarnates every child’s dream of freedom and power. The Opelousas Little Theatre is pleased to announce the next production: Pippi Longstocking, the Family Musical. Opelousas Little Theatre South City Park Opelousas LA 70570
